Timeline from Resident to Teacher Leader
When you join the PUC Teacher Residency Program, you make a commitment to yourself and to PUC to serve in our schools for a minimum of five years. In return, we’ll train you, pay you, support you, hire you, and celebrate your success with you.
From Residency in Teacher Leader in 5 fulfilling years:
Year 1: Residency
Residents work alongside a PUC Mentor Teacher four days per week, preparing to gradually take over the classroom teaching. On the fifth day, Residents attend a weekly all-day seminar with their cohort, discussing coursework and theories and practicing classroom instructional moves. Residents take online education classes through LMU during the summer and school year. They will also complete required credentialing exams throughout the year. Residents will obtain their preliminary teaching credential at the successful completion of Year 1.
Year 2: Preliminary Credential and Induction Year 1
Having earned their preliminary teaching credential, Residents transition in their second year to graduates of TRP who can be hired as the Teacher of Record and teach in their own classroom. Residents begin Induction, which is a state required two-year new teacher support program, and continue to receive one-to-one coaching support from their Induction Mentor and the TRP Coordinator. As a participant in PUC TRP, Resident graduates have their Induction costs paid for by the program (a $4,000 cost to teachers, but TRP grads pay nothing).
Year 3: Induction Year 2 and Master’s
Graduates complete the second of year of Induction and complete optional coursework for a Master’s degree through LMU. Coaching supports continue through Induction and with the TRP Coordinator.
Year 4: Clear Credential
The CA Clear Credential is granted after the completion of the Induction Program. Graduates continue teaching in their own classrooms with their Clear Credential at the beginning of their fourth year of teaching.
Year 5: Teacher Leadership
With the completion of the Clear Credential and Master’s degree, graduates of PUC TRP become teacher leaders at their schools. TRP alumni are encouraged to continue giving back to the community through peer tutoring, collegial collaboration, or coaching and mentorship of new teachers.
